Update on Sensory Aids – Effective from 22nd April

We have recently seen an increase in students bringing in items such as toys advertised on some shopping platforms, often referred to as “fidget toys.” While we recognise that some students benefit from sensory input to support focus and regulation, it is important to clarify our approach as an academy.

At Outwood Academy Newbold, we refer to these as sensory aids rather than fidget toys, and in order to maintain a purposeful and distraction-free learning environment, we have a consistent standard for what is permitted.

Only academy-approved sensory aids are allowed. The only approved aid is a discrete mesh with a marble, or something we can put in a child’s blazer pocket to minimise disruption. These are available from the SEND team and can be provided as part of a wider conversation or formal SEND review.

From Monday 22nd April, any other items brought in from home—regardless of their online marketing or intended use—must be kept at home. This includes all unofficial fidget toys.

Why this is necessary:

Many of the items being brought in are brightly coloured, noisy, or overly tactile in ways that are distracting to both the user and others in the classroom. They can hinder learning, shift focus away from teaching, and undermine the purpose of supporting students with genuine sensory needs.

We appreciate your support in reinforcing this.
